Western route: Tartar

Population of the district - 94,200 people; district center, the city of Tartar - 17,900 people.

Garabagh is a blessed land, one of the most ancient regions of Azerbaijan, where the famous Garabagh Khanate, centered in the city of Shusha, was once located. The region is rich in ancient historical and architectural monuments and has magnificent fauna and flora. It is the birthplace of one of the most vivid and colorful types of Azerbaijani carpet - "Garabagh", and the famous Garabagh horse breed was developed here. A land with such nature could not fail to give Azerbaijan talented poets, writers and musicians. The most famous khanende ? performers of mugham (a national song genre) - come from Garabagh, and mugham melodies formed the basis of Azerbaijan's national opera. Unfortunately, Garabagh is now occupied by Armenian invaders.

TARTAR DISTRICT borders the Inja River ("Tender") to the north and lies in the lower reaches of the Tartar River. In winter the temperature does not drop below 2 degrees above zero, and in summer it rarely rises above 25 degrees. The climate in the district varies ? there are areas with a temperate climate, and there are also separate semi-desert areas. It is these differences that gave rise to transhumant sheep farming in the region. The Khachin-chay River also flows through the district.

In deep antiquity this territory was part of the state of Albania - one of the early states of Azerbaijan (Manna, Media, Atropatene, Caucasian Albania). The Albanians, like the rest of the Azerbaijanis, were Zoroastrians in deep antiquity, and later adopted Christianity.

THE CITY OF TARTAR is the administrative center of Tartar District. It lies on both banks of the Tartar River. Distance from Baku - 332 km. Besides livestock breeding and agriculture, people here also practice traditional crafts - carpet weaving, knitting and embroidery. The city lies on an ancient caravan route; its historical name is Chaparkhana. There are a number of architectural sites nearby: in the villages of Tartar, Kengerli, Garadaghli, Gaynag, Azad Garagoyunlu.
