Southern Route: Bilasuvar

Population of the district - 78,900 people; district centre, the town of Bilasuvar - 18 thousand people.

BILASUVAR district borders Iran to the west. The local climate is that of semi-deserts and dry steppes with dry summers; these climatic features have favoured the development of cotton growing, grain crops and livestock farming here. According to one version, the name of the district is connected with the search for water - "there is water here"; according to another, with the presence of skilled people able to find water in desert terrain - "those who know where there is water".

As throughout the territory of Azerbaijan, which has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds and remains of architectural monuments, here too monuments recall the ancient history of the region: the ancient settlements of CHIL AGDAM, ICHARI AGDAM and TORAGAY (period of antiquity and the early Middle Ages). Most of these archaeological sites, unfortunately, have still not been studied.
