The Kura and Araz Continue to Be Polluted

The National Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has monitored pollution in the border sections of the Kura and Araz basins for the first ten days of January.
According to the ministry's press service, significant exceedances of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of phenols and copper compounds were found in the water of the border section of the Kura: at the Shikhli-2 station by 1.1 and 4 times respectively, at the Aghstafachay station by 2 and 3 times, and at the Aghstafachay Reservoir by 1.4 and 3 times. The content of biogenic substances and ammonium was within the norm, while the concentration of nitrite ions exceeded the MPC by 1.5 times at the Shikhli-2 station, by 1.9 times at the Gazakh station on the Aghstafachay River, and by 2 times at the Aghstafachay Reservoir station.
Monitoring also revealed significant exceedances of the MPC of phenols and copper compounds in the waters of the Araz River in the border section: by 3 times at the Horadiz station, and by 2 times at the 1-Shahseven and Bahramtapa stations. The content of biogenic substances and ammonium is within the norm, while the concentration of nitrite ions exceeds the MPC by 1.2 times at the 1-Shahseven station.
The oxygen regime of the water at all points was within the norm – 6.98-9.32 mg/l.
