Rivers in western Azerbaijan may overflow their banks

Due to the rising water level in the Agstafa River in western Azerbaijan, there is a danger of flooding. This was reported by Ramiz Tatarov, deputy head of the executive authority of the Agstafa district.
In Azerbaijan, water levels in rivers rise in March–May due to snowmelt in the mountains and heavy precipitation.
Tatarov said that despite work to reinforce the banks of the Agstafa River, the danger of flooding still remains.
Last year, construction began on dams two kilometres long on the Agstafa River and three kilometres long on the Kura River.
Heavy precipitation in April–May 2007 led to a rise in the level of the Agstafa River and its overflowing. As a result, the bridge over the river was completely destroyed and became unusable. As a result of the Kura River flooding during this period, about 300 ha of farmland of the village of Pirli and more than 20 ha of the village of Qiriqkasamanli were left under water. Last year's natural disaster caused damage to the economy of the Agstafa district amounting to more than 1 mln. manat.
Agstafa is located 420 km west of the capital, Baku.
