Results of the latest monitoring of the Kura and Araz rivers published

In the third ten-day period of June, staff of the National Environmental Monitoring Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources carried out the latest monitoring to study the level of pollution of the transboundary Kura and Araz rivers, as well as their transboundary tributaries.

According to the ministry, during this period the water discharge of the Kura increased by 141 m3/sec compared to the 2nd ten-day period of June, reaching 434 m3/sec.

According to the monitoring results, as a result of the impact of untreated household waste discharged into the Kura and its tributaries on the territory of Georgia and Armenia, as well as wastewater from industrial facilities, the amount of biogenic substances greatly exceeded the maximum permissible limit (MPL).

The amount of some specific water pollutants – phenols and copper compounds – exceeded the MPL.
Thus, at the Shikhli-2 station the level of the main water pollutants – phenols and copper compounds – exceeded the limit by 2 times, at the Agstafachay station phenols exceeded it by 2 times and copper compounds by 3 times, and at the Agstafachay reservoir phenols exceeded the limit by 3 times and copper compounds by 2 times.

In the 2nd ten-day period of June, the water discharge of the Araz river was 71 m3sec.

According to the results of the monitoring, at the Horadiz station the level of copper compounds exceeded the MPL by 2 times and phenols by 3 times, at the Shahsevan-1 station copper compounds by 3 times and phenols by 2 times, and at the Bahramtapa station copper compounds by 3 times and phenols by 2 times.
At some stations the level of ammonium ions in the water slightly exceeded the limit.
