Pollution of Azerbaijan's transboundary rivers on the territory of Armenia exceeds the norm

Pollution of Azerbaijan's transboundary rivers - the Kura and the Araz - on the territory of Georgia and Armenia exceeds the norm, the country's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said.

In order to study the level of pollution of the transboundary Kura and Araz rivers, as well as their transboundary tributaries, another round of monitoring was carried out in the first ten days of May. During this period the water flow in the Kura increased by 315 cubic meters per second compared to the last ten days of April, reaching 566 cubic meters per second, the ministry's press service said on Thursday.

According to the monitoring results, the discharge of household waste and the dumping of waste from industrial facilities in Armenia and Georgia into the Kura without filtration have led to an increase in biogenic substances in the river. Admixtures of phenol and copper compounds, which are specific pollutants in the water, significantly exceed the permissible norm.

According to the results of the monitoring, the water flow in the Araz, a river shared with Armenia, was 115 cubic meters per second. Copper compounds, the main water pollutants, exceeded the permissible admixture norm at the Horadiz point of the Araz by two times, phenols by three times; copper compounds and phenols at the Shahsevan I point by three times; copper compounds at the Bahramtapa point by three times, and phenols by two times.
