OSCE holds seminar on environmental security in Baku

An OSCE seminar on environmental security is being held in Baku. During the seminar, representatives of ministries and local and international experts are discussing the main problems Azerbaijan faces in this area. The head of the OSCE Office in Baku, Luis Herrero Ansola, said at the event that environmental problems affect the overall state of the country, cause damage and pose a threat to human security: "There are a number of serious environmental problems in the South Caucasus, but they are difficult to solve given the existing political obstacles." In turn, the head of the UN Office in Baku, Bruno Pouezat, noted that 20% of Azerbaijan's territory is not under the government's control: "Therefore it is difficult to make sure that waters are not polluted and forests are not cut down there." According to him, many problems also remain in the region from Soviet times.
