Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan: "In the coming years Baku will become the cleanest city in the world"

In the coming years Baku may become the cleanest city in the world thanks to the implementation of the action plan to improve the environmental situation in Azerbaijan for 2006-2010.
According to Arif Iskandarov, senior consultant at the nature protection policy department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Absheron Peninsula is currently considered the most polluted territory, since 60% of industrial enterprises are located here. According to him, some of the enterprises have already been closed down, while others are being moved out of the city.
As a result of the measures taken by the government, the level of pollution on the Absheron Peninsula has decreased significantly. Compared to the Soviet period, the pollution indicator has fallen tenfold.
