In Baku 70 percent of wastewater flows into the Caspian Sea untreated – minister

Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources has stated that in Baku 70 percent of wastewater flows untreated into the ground and the Caspian Sea. "One of Baku's serious problems is the low level of wastewater treatment. On the Absheron Peninsula only the Hovsan treatment plant is operating, at 30 percent capacity," said Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyngulu Baghirov.
The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan has installed modular local treatment facilities meeting international standards in the settlements of Bilgah, Buzovna, Mardakan, Pirshagi, Nardaran and at the Amburan beach on the Absheron Peninsula.
According to the minister, over the past 4 months a 61 km stretch of the northern coast of the Absheron Peninsula has been cleared of wastewater. Baghirov also said that if Azersu restores all treatment facilities within 2-3 years, "not a single drop of polluted water will flow" into the sea.
