Higher fines for tree felling are not having the desired effect

In the first quarter of 2008, more than 300 lawsuits were filed against persons who had cut down trees.
As Day.Az reports, citing AzerTAj, this was announced by Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov at a Cabinet of Ministers meeting devoted to the results of the country's socio-economic development in the first quarter of 2008.

The minister noted that during the reporting period 24 foresters were dismissed and administrative penalties were imposed on 67 persons.

"Unfortunately, one of the reasons for tree felling in the regions is the problems foresters face. Raising fines and dismissing those responsible is not having the desired effect," H.Bagirov noted.

The minister noted that within a short period of time 8 national parks, 4 nature reserves, 3 wildlife sanctuaries and 3 natural monuments have been created across the republic, and the territory of 5 existing reserves has been expanded.
