First Azerbaijani expedition has been to Antarctica

The first Azerbaijani expedition in history, led by the President of the Extreme Sports Federation and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov, has been to Antarctica.
This was reported by the press service of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology.
According to the information, the expedition began on 25 December 2008.
The expedition set off into Antarctica from the Chilean station Patriot Hills. Along the entire route, the expedition members carried out scientific research work; more than 300 observation and measurement tasks were performed, and up to 2 kg of various valuable geological samples were collected along the way.
According to information from the expedition group transmitted via the Iridium satellite system, on 11 January 2009 they completed the ascent of Mount Vinson, 5,140 meters above sea level.
The expedition members placed on the mountain the flag of Azerbaijan and a bronze plaque, one side of which bears a photo of national leader Heydar Aliyev with his words "I am proud that I am Azerbaijani", and the other side a photo of President Ilham Aliyev with the words "Azerbaijan, forward with Ilham Aliyev".
