Iran's International Sturgeon Research Institute has reported that sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea have declined by 25-30% and that, if the use of banned fishing methods continues, stocks of these fish species will fall to zero in 13 years.
A joint project to monitor sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea is currently being carried out with the cooperation of Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
Work under the project is being conducted in coastal waters stretching from Astara (Azerbaijan) to Bandar Torkaman (Iran).
