Baku is ready to study Moscow's proposals for a temporary ban on sturgeon fishing in the Caspian

Russia's proposal to introduce a five-year moratorium on sturgeon fishing in the Caspian Sea implies criteria that do not serve the interests of all the countries of the region, said Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov.

"A moratorium on sturgeon fishing must be based on certain criteria and take into account the interests of the Caspian states," said H. Bagirov.

According to him, several years ago, when sturgeon stocks in the Caspian fell sharply, Russia rejected a similar proposal from the Azerbaijani side.

"If Russia puts forward such a proposal during the negotiations, we will probably accept those aspects of it that are beneficial to us," the minister noted.

The State Fisheries Committee of the Russian Federation had earlier proposed introducing a five-year moratorium on sturgeon fishing in the Caspian.
