Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology: "Water levels in the rivers of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus have risen due to torrential rains"

Due to the torrential rains recorded during the first ten days of May, water levels in the rivers of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus have risen.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan.
As a result of the rains on May 2-3, 6-7 and 9-10, short-term floods were recorded on the Kishchay, Shinchay, Kungutchay, Zayzitchay, Ayrichay, Turyanchay, Talachay, Balakanchay, Mazymchay and Kurmukchay rivers in the Shaki, Oghuz, Gabala, Zagatala and Balakan districts of Azerbaijan.
According to the Ministry of Ecology, the highest water levels are currently observed in the rivers of the Balakan-Shaki region, at 110-160% of the ten-day norm.
"In the other rivers, however, water levels are below normal. Thus, water levels in the rivers of the Lesser Caucasus are at 40-50%, in the rivers of the Guba-Khachmaz region at 50-70%, and in the rivers of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Lankaran-Astara region at 15-30% of the norm," the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan said in its statement.
Currently, the water level of the Kura River flowing into the Shamkir Reservoir at the Giragkasaman point is 508 cubic meters (68% of the ten-day norm), and the water level flowing into the Mingachevir Reservoir from the river.
Ganikh is 208 cubic meters (102% of the ten-day norm).
The Ministry of Ecology noted that, owing to the regulation of water levels in the Mingachevir and Araz reservoirs, no sharp change in the level of the Kura River is being observed.
Currently, the level of the Kura at the Surra point is 482 cm (604 cm in 2007), in Shirvan 415 cm (567 cm), in Salyan 294 cm (369 cm), in Banka 320 cm (373 cm), and in Araz-Novruzlu 203 cm (400 cm).
