Azerbaijan intends to take measures to prevent environmental terror in the occupied territories

All aspects of the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, including the environmental situation, will be analysed and appropriate measures will be taken, said Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov.
According to the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan, as a result of fires in the seized territories, Azerbaijan suffered damage amounting to 159 million manats in 2006 and 15 million manats in 2007.
In 2006, an OSCE mission, which included the World Election Monitoring Center, the UN Environment Programme, and experts from the European Commission, the European Union and the Council of Europe, carried out monitoring to assess the environmental damage caused to the region by the fires. Based on the results of the monitoring, recommendations were prepared on measures to be taken in the field of the environment. The recommendations cannot be implemented because the conflict is ongoing.
According to the deputy minister, the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan remains tense, and the tactic of illegally settling Armenians in these territories and their economic exploitation continue. "This issue will be monitored within the framework of the Resolution on the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan adopted by the UN General Assembly," the deputy minister said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries arose in 1988 due to Armenia's territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts – 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory – are occupied by the Armed Forces of Armenia. In May 1994, the parties reached a ceasefire, and peace talks, so far unsuccessful, are still being held under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by Russia, France and the USA.
