Azerbaijan has sufficient natural water reserves for self-sufficiency. Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Bagirov told journalists this on Friday.
Azerbaijan's water reserves amount to 32 billion cubic meters. Of these, 27–28 billion cubic meters form outside the country and enter Azerbaijan's territory in a polluted state. 8.67 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijan's annual water reserves are concentrated in underground basins. Groundwater makes up 23 percent of the total water reserves.
According to Bagirov, Azerbaijan must create its own environmental industry, use its existing water reserves carefully and not pollute them.
"Azerbaijan needs to install even more treatment facilities so that in the future any amount of water can be treated for reuse, thereby ensuring our water security," the minister said.
Azerbaijan is considered the most water-poor state in the South Caucasus. Each person gets 2.2 times less water than in Georgia and 1.7 times less than in Armenia. In addition, about 70 percent of the republic's river water reserves come from transit rivers.
