A decision has been made to build a meteorological station on one of the highest peaks of the Caucasus. This was announced to journalists in Baku on Friday by Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Huseyn Bagirov.
According to him, the meteorological station will be built either on Mount Tufan or on Shahdag, at an altitude of 3200 m. "Through this station we will receive information every week about the rise or fall in the level of the glaciers. This process is a very important issue in global observations. These areas are a 'climate kitchen': climatic influences coming from outside take shape there, and this station will make it possible to obtain the necessary information," the minister said.
He said that the accuracy of weather forecasts in Azerbaijan has recently increased. "The growth in accuracy is linked to the expansion of international relations, close ties with major meteorological centres, the regular acquisition of maps obtained from the meteorological satellites of Europe, Turkey and America, and the restoration of existing observation stations," Bagirov added.
