A decision on resuming bird hunting may be made by the State Commission for the Prevention of "Bird Flu" in the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Coordination of Joint Activities of All Bodies in this Field, established by order of the country's president of 16 February 2006. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR).

The ministry noted that, despite reports that the MENR had received a request from the State Veterinary Service under the Ministry of Agriculture to temporarily lift the ban on shooting synanthropic and migratory birds in view of the stable epizootic situation in the country, no request of this kind had been received.

The ministry also added that, under Article 16.1 of the Law "On Hunting", the start and duration of the hunting season in Azerbaijan are set by the MENR. In addition, given the breeding period of birds, bird hunting is not permitted from February to the end of August, even when the epizootic situation is stable.

It should be noted that the SVS reported having applied to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources to temporarily lift the ban on bird hunting from May to November, citing the stable epizootic situation regarding "bird flu" over the past 3 years, the end of the wintering period of migratory birds, the absence of "bird flu" cases in the countries along their migration route, and numerous requests from hunters.
