Nargin Island
Hi everyone! Well, at last my friends and I got ourselves together and headed out to this "virgin" island of Nargin. The wind was a light south-easterly. On Saturday at 18.00 we – me, Vugar, Yusif, Zakir, Gena, Aynur and Vadim – got on a boat, and 15 minutes later we were landed on the island like a commando squad. First thing, we picked out a spot to set up base. We chose a half-ruined building crawling with snakes. After clearing the camp of snakes, we poured kerosene around the camp perimeter.
Our first time in the water didn't make us too happy: the wind wasn't in our favour, the water was murky, but we shot enough mullet for fish soup and for the grill. There's not much to say about the fish, the photos make it all clear anyway, but I'll tell you about another adventure – but let's take it in order. After eating shashlik and cooking the fish soup, we decided it was time to sleep. We lay down, as you can see in the pics, right on the shore. But with this crowd you just can't fall asleep. Pranks, jokes, tall tales, and finally by 4 in the morning we dozed off. Every one of us woke up several times in the night thinking a snake had crawled onto him, but it all turned out fine. Morning came. During the night the wind had switched to northerly, and by morning it had died down to a dead calm. As soon as we woke up, we pulled on our "tuxedos" and threw ourselves into the water. The water was clear, but there were no fish at all. At 12 o'clock Vugar, Yusif and I went into the water again. The fish were starting to show up. After swimming around for about 30 minutes, as luck would have it, the spear of my pneumatic gun broke at the base of the notch while I was loading it. I went back for another gun. At camp, we loaded water and cigarettes into the inflatable boat, and Gena and I set off to where Vugar and Yusif were hunting. When we caught up with them, I got into the water and we all swam off together to hunt around the sunken ships. There were no big fish. By then we were just shooting for food. We decided to take a break, drank some water, smoked some cigarettes and decided to head back, but not the way we came – instead we'd keep going along the island. With four of us in the boat, rowing against the current was impossible. After paddling a bit we reached the military unit. To avoid any risk we decided not to go past the front of the military unit, but to cross over land to the other side of the island. And that's what we did. We threw all the gear into the boat, each of us grabbed the boat from one of the four sides, and under the scorching sun we started trekking across the island. The "pleasure" was indescribable. On one side the sun is roasting you and heating up the wetsuit on you, on the other it's impossible to walk on the red-hot sand. Long story short, somehow, through fire, water and brass pipes, we made it to the other shore. We'd just got into the boat and bam, the oar broke. We had to push the boat through the water. Well, I won't describe our suffering, but effort and friendship helped us get back to camp by 6 in the evening. At 9 a boat came for us, and we pushed off from the "virgin" island of Nargin just as "virgin" as the island itself.
P.S.: It was a bit like being Robinson Crusoe. The conditions were so tough that by the end our nerves were giving out.
